Comments: I've wanted to knit this sweater for at least 2 years. I am SO glad I did. The construction of this garment is absolute genius. Definitely not a beginner project, but it really kept me engaged. Wish I could have made it a bit longer.

Comments: Big love for this sweater. Jennifer is such a brilliant designer. All this is is a rectangle seamed together with a 3-needle bind off. Can't get much more simple. You can also wear it many different ways (see here).

I have been in a serious knitting funk lately. I FINALLY finished this sweater. It turned out beautifully, if I do say so myself. The hand of the Rowan Lenpur is wonderful for summer knits. It has the drape of linen without the scratchiness.

I couldn't bear to knit the tie. Maybe after I have some separation from the project.

Don't fuss Mom because I'm not modeling it!

Comments: Love this! I like how it is so different. It was very easy to do. You basically knit the garment in the shape of a plus, fold it in half, and knit ribbing around the cuffs and collar.

Comments: It took me 4 days to knit this. I'm very bummed, though, because it is too big for me. I made the smallest size, and my gauge was even a little tight. My shoulders are just too narrow to keep it up. There may be an error in that pattern. I'm going to email Kristeen to see if I'm correct. Also, it took me a little bit more than the 3 balls called for in the pattern.

Comments: I made this to teach as a class at Yarntopia. Easy knit. There is minimal seaming, but you have to be careful when you knit with Kidsilk Haze. It is so delicate, that you really have to be conscious of each stitch you knit.

Comments: Very straighforward pattern, suitable for a beginner sweater knitter. The most difficult aspect was lining up the stripes when seaming. The yarn is delish. Adding it to my favorite yarn list. Not one knot in 14 balls! Waaaay better track record than Debbie Bliss Cashmerino.

French Girl Knits / Fitted Knits

Kristeen's (aka The French Girl) new book came out last week. It is AWESOME! There is something in it for everyone. All of the patterns are seamless, which makes it accessable to those knitters who have "seamphobia".

I test knit Niobe for her, about two years ago. I can't remember all of the details of my yarn choice, needles, etc. Love it! I know I used Rowan Kid Classic and Rowan Kidsilk Night held together.

I have had Stefanie Japel's Fitted Knits in my stash forever. I just haven't gotten around to knitting anything from it. My friend Jennifer bought me the most awesome George Michael tank top for my b-day, and it just needed that perfect "something" to go on top of it.

Yarn: Kidsilk Aura #762 Damson - 9 balls

Comments: What a cool pattern. It comes in both a pullover and cardigan version and is knit nearly seamlessly. I had a little confusion when I did the cross-over piece at the bust, but a quick email to the designer cleared everything up.

Kidsilk Aura knits up like a dream....like a cloud. It is a great fiber for the south because it is so light weight.

I know it is tacky to pat yourself on the back, but I'm feeling blue today, so I'm trying to cheer myself up.

Project #1 - Malabrigo Slippers by CocoKnits

Yarn - Malabrigo Worsted - Rich Chocolate & Black - 1 ball each

Comments - Gauge was funny on this one. I think Malabrigo may "fluff up" over time, thus making it a heavier gauge. I had to go down two needle sizes for the brown and one for the black. Even though they are the same yarn, you should gauge both colors.

I plan to teach these as a project class at Yarntopia. These are a fun and quick project for advanced beginner knitters. Some skills used are: picking up stitches and short rows.

Project #2 - Yvette from French Girl

Yarn - Rowan Big Wool #01 White Hot - 3.5 balls

Comments - I knit nearly the whole thing while watching the VP debate. I plan to wear this cutie this fall with jeans and knee-high brown leather boots (which I'm asking for for my b-day).

I knit the smallest size, which I think will work for most people. The pattern greatly over estimated the amount of yarn used. It called for 6 balls, but it only took me 3.5. I'm also teaching this as a project class for advanced beginners. Skills you will learn: cables and picking up stitches.

Project #3 - Trapeze Jacket by Stitch Diva Studios

Yarn - Louisa Harding Kashmir DK #20 Burnt Orange - 15 balls

Comments - This jacket was a long time in the making. Though easy, all of that ribbing is a time eater! I made this for to give to my friend Jennifer for her birthday next Saturday. I hope it fits! As you know, I LOOOOOVE Louisa Harding Kashmir. Some knitters are "yarn" people, and some people are "pattern" people. I'm the latter, but this yarn even makes me swoon.

Comments: Another winner from my favorite designer! The pattern is wonderfully written, as expected. The Kimono Ribbon was fun to work with, though I would suggest putting it in a container while working. The cone tends to jump around.

I started this as a knit-a-long with my BFF Jennifer. This will be her first "real" seamed sweater.

Little Girl Shrugs

Pattern: Little Girl's Shrug from Knitting Pure & Simple

Yarn: RYC Cashsoft DK #516 sage & # 525 kingfisher - 2 balls each

Notes: Easy seamless knit. It would be a wonderful project for a first sweater. Knitting Pure & Simple also has a similar women's pattern. It would make a great mother/daughter sweater.

I had a little trouble with gauge, even though I used DK weight yarn which is what the pattern called for. The pattern is easily adjusted, though, by just continuing the raglan increases. Another fitting advantage is that it is knit top down, and therefore can be tried on by the recipient as you knit it.

My girlie-girls are going to wear these on the first day of school. Won't they look cute?

Comments: This is from Louisa's new fall book called Wildspur. They yarn is totally yummy, a chunky wool/acrylic blend with a little bit of linen running through it. I took out a repeat from the pattern because I have a pin head.

Pattern: The Big Easy from Plymouth's Done by Monday Afghan book

Yarn: Plymouth Encore Worsted #208-5 balls, Plymouth Encore Worsted #999-5 balls

Comments: I made this for my daughters' babysitter who will be attending Texas A&M in the fall. The Plymouth book is awesome. Lots of very simple afghans that you can whip up in a week.

Pattern: Bless from Kim Hargreave's Heartfelt book

Yarn: Rowan Biggy Print #260 Mermaid - 3 balls

Comments: I have twenty balls of this yarn that I frogged from a sweater I knit two years ago. The pattern is very simple and cute. Easily done in an evening.

Comments: This would make a wonderful first sweater. The pattern is well written and simple due to the fact that there is so seaming.

The Louisa Harding Kashmir, as some of y'all know, is my absolute favorite yarn to knit with. It is so squishy and soft. It has a good deal of stretch to it, so it worked well with the form fitting garment.

I was off on my gauge (too small) so I went up a needle size and also went up a size.

Pattern: Kelly by Lois Daykin from Rowan Beach Cool
Yarn: Rowan Linen Print #349-6 balls, Nashua Cilantro #12-1 ball
Comments: I knit this back in February, but just never blogged about it. I added a good bit of length to the pattern, therefor I ran out of Linen Print before finishing the edging. The Cilantro worked out well for that. Thanks to Sheryl for doing my crochet trim!!

Comments: I blocked this sweater to spec, and it still seems short to me. Not that I mind, really. I think it is still adorable. There were no mistakes in the pattern that I could find.

This sweater was a bit of a challenge to me, so I'm proud of it.

The Twinkle Mohair is VERY scratching before washing. After handwashing it, though, it becomes much softer. The price is wonderful as well ($6 for 310 yds). The whole sweater cost me $24 retail!!

Comments: If I were to do it over again, I would have added the Navy yarn at the side as opposed to the middle as written in the pattern. I don't like how the jog looks, but I can live with it. I also cut out two of the cable repeats in the collar because I was running out of yarn. Also, I thought it would be too floppy.

Comments: This sock is a long time coming. I bought the yarn probably 3 or 4 years ago. Started it when we first opened the shop. Had a falling out with socks shortly thereafter and threw the first half completed sock in my stash drawer. I started it again after finishing all of my UFO's and felt guilty that the sock was languishing in my drawer. I actually kinda sorta enjoyed working on it. Maybe I'll give socks another chance.

Sheryl and I had to wonderful opportunity to participate in a knitting segment that will be shown on Great Day Houston this March. The segment began with and interview with Kate Jacobs, author of The Friday Night Knitting Club. Kate was a doll. Y'all should check out her book! The second segment had Sheryl teaching the interviewer how to knit. She did an awesome job. Here is a picture of Sheryl, Kate Jacobs, and myself.

Comments: The first incarnation of this yarn was the Karate Sweater from the same book. The fit was awful on me, so I promptly frogged. I am much happier with the results this time. It is a great fit, quick knit, and was fun to do.

Can I just say, I am a HUGE Louisa Harding fan. Her yarns are scrumptious. Her color choices are so sophisticated and modern. Her designs are best in the business. Seriously, if y'all haven't checked her stuff out, go right now to your LYS and see it.

I had the pleasure of meeting her on two other occasions at TNNA (the national yarn market), but yesterday she came to our store. She spoke for a little over an hour to a packed house. Afterwards, she allowed our customers to see and even try on several of her new designs, including some from her not-yet-published summer book Summer Classics.

Listing her talk about her background and how she gets her inspiration was fascinating. I feel more energized about knitting now than I have been in quite some time. Thank you Louisa!

The sweater that Louisa is wearing is from her upcoming Summer Classics book using her new yarn Jasmine. It is a cotton/bamboo blend that has a thin metallic thread run through it. I'm wearing Marie knit out of Thalia from her current book Dauphine. After trying it on, I'm in LOVE.

She also signed autographs for both of my girls. Along with her sweet note, she drew caricatures of the girls wearing crowns. So cute.

Yarn: Rowan Kid Silk Night #608, Phildar Sunset in Argent

I bought the yarn and the pattern in Montpellier, France while vacationing there. I had the pattern translated when I got home. The Kid Silk was substituted for an incorrect Phildar mohair I bought by mistake. I love the bat-wing sleeves on this sweater. The Phildar Sunset is a metallic that really gives it some "bling". All in all, I adore this sweater. Not just because it is different, but because it reminds me of my wonderful trip to France.

My second sweater in a row with a Dolman sleeve. Again, I am SO pleased with how this sweater turned out. I was afraid that the ribbon would be scratchy, which it isn't. It is hard to tell from the picture, but the sweater is knit in a really cool lace pattern. The design is a one-size-fits-all, so it is baggy on me. The fit is slouchy, which I like as well. I made this for Yarntopia's upcoming visit by Louisa Harding herself. Hope she likes it.

Comments: This is the third City Shawl that I have made. The blue Romance one that I knit for my grandmother turned out so well, that I had to have one. Again, the Romance does not disappoint. Love the subtle "bling".

I named this bear after my Grandma Peggy. She was truly an amazing woman. I loved her dearly and miss her terribly. How she would have loved Yarntopia. She was a fantastic knitter, but never had the pleasure of getting to knit with really luscious yarn. The inheritance I received from her estate was what I used to open the shop with, which I'm sure she is delighted about.

My grandmother died from the effects of Alzheimer's disease. I honor of her, I'm starting the Peggy's Bear program at the shop. At first I thought about doing lap throws or bed slippers, but my mother suggested the dolls. Alzheimer's patients like to cuddle on soft things, it seems.

I am asking for customers on the first day of each month to knit a bear to donate to the Alzheimer's ward of the nursing home across the street from the shop. Yarntopia will supply the pattern and will give 10% off for the yarn bought to knit the bear. Sheryl and I will collect all of the bears and deliver them to the nursing home along with a card signed by all of our donors. I'm looking forward to putting a smile on peoples faces. I hope you all will join me.

Stashbuster Afghan

Pattern: Stashbuster Afghan from Stitch Diva (aka The Love Afghan)

Yarn: 26 different yarns (mostly from my stash)

Why "The Love Afghan" you ask? I made this for my husband. It will probably be the only thing that I've made him that he actually likes.

This pattern is all the rage at Yarntopia. We can't keep the hooks in stock! It is done in tunisian crochet. Don't let the crochet in the name scare you off knitters! The only crochet you need to know for this project is the chain stitch, and you only do that to cast on.

I throughly enjoyed doing this project. It was extremely simple and quick work as far as an afghan goes. The rhythm of the stitches is hypnotic. I also loved the creative side of working with all the different yarns. It felt almost like painting with fiber.

Comments: This is a perfect yarn for this project. Soft, warm, with a little "bling". What's not to love! I used size 17 32" circs. It took me 5 balls, but if I had to do it over I would have gone for a 6th.

This was made to give to my grandmother for her 9oth birthday.

Pattern: Simple Knitted Bodice by Stefanie Japel (again) for Stitch Diva

Yarn: Disco Lights by Tilli Tomas in Limeade Breeze, Pure & Simple by Tilli Tomas in Limeade Breeze

Comments: Pattern is well written. It is knit in the round, with minimal finishing work (which I love). I had to rip out the collar once due to the fact that it was floppy. By decreasing the number of picked up stitches on the second try, I no longer had that problem. I wish I would have bound off the bottom tighter as well. It is too loose.

I also had an entire ball of the Pure and Simple left over from the project. It is a pricey yarn, so that was disappointing.

Pattern: Venus by Kate Jackson from Knitscene Spring 2007
Yarn: Rowan Holiday #34 Shale
Comments: I've wanted to use this yarn since it came out last year. The yarn is cotton and looks sort of like gauze. It feels like the softest towel on your skin.

This would be an excellent first sweater pattern. It is done in one peace from the bottom front. You knit up and over your shoulders and end at the back bottom. Minimum seaming is required.

Two words of advice for knitters of this pattern: Do not make the neck opening as big as the pattern calls for. It starts off OK, but as the day wears on the garment stretches. I could hardly keep it on. I wound up seaming up the sides of the neck a few inches. Also, you will want to seam the sweater with a much thinner yarn. Because Holiday is super bulky, the seams will be really thick if you use the Holiday.

Comments: I never knew crochet was so much fun! It certainly helped that I had a master crocheter (Sheryl) holding my hand during the process. Crochet will definitely be in my future, especially when this book comes out! I would highly recommend all knitters out there to give crochet a try. It was fun to try something new.

Hamptons Halter

Pattern: Hamptons Halter from Twinkle's Big City Knits

Yarn: Twinkle Cruise #36 Mauve (sort of a milk chocolate brown)

Comments: I loved doing this knit and love the finished product. Cruise is an absolutely luscious yarn (60% silk, 40% cotton) with a beautiful drape. Seven days from start to finish.

Caution #1: If you do any of the patterns in the book that call for the Cruise, you are supposed to hold four strands of the yarn together. Do not try to knit from 4 balls! It creates a big tangled mess. It is much better to take the four strands from their respective yarn cakes and wind the four strands into one giant ball.

Caution #2: Go to the Classic Elite Website and print out the errata for the book. Their are quite a few corrections.

Something Red

Comments: Wonderful pattern, but I made a wrong yarn choice. Calmer, which is one of my all time favorite yarns, just doesn't have enough body for this pattern. It would have turned out much better in a heavier, less spongy, yarn. I'll still wear it though because it is very comfy.

TNNA and a new KAL

Sheryl and I are back from our whirlwind trip to TNNA (the yarn market). We had already done all of our fall yarn purchasing through our travelling reps, so we concentrated on seeing what was new in patterns and accessories.

I was really jazzed about the new Amy Butler knitting bags. The opening order was really high so we couldn't invest in them right then, but I hope to pick them up for the shop in the near future. We did by the new Namaste bag which resembles a yoga mat bag. VERY different and cool.

We bought new patterns from designers we love: Stitch Diva, Glampyre, Chris Bylsma, Knitting Pure & Simple, Oat Couture to name a few. Phoenix Bess is a new designer that we picked up that has some really cool designs.

We saw a LOT of handpainted yarns at the show. To take advantage of those yarns, the yarn companies are doing a lot of colorwork pieces. Mainly entrelac and modular knitting. We will be doing some classes on both in the upcoming months.

We got to hang out with some of our favorite people at the show as well. It was awesome to catch up with the French Girl (Kristeen Griffin-Grimes). Not only is she an amazing designer, but she is a very interesting person and a great friend. I can't wait to travel with her in France! Y'all should go over and read Sheryl's Blog to hear about us rubbing elbows with the Crochet elite as well.

Finally, I'll leave you with a new Knit-a-Long I started. I've been obsessed with the new book Twinkle's Big City Knits since we got it in the store. I've started a blog for it at www.twinklealong.blogspot.com. You can see the designs from the book here. I plan to knit the Hamptons Halter, the Karate Sweater, and the Rockefeller Sweater. I got the yarn for all three on Friday! She has a very modern sense of fashion, which I find lacking in a lot of knitting design. Go check it out!

We are so lucky to have Karen E. as part of our Yarntopia family. Not only is she an amazing instructor, but an extremely talented designer. Two of the cabled purses that she's designed are absolutely darling, but not practical for me to use on a daily basis. I was in need of a "Big Momma Bag" to be able to tote around all of the things that a wife and mother of two needs on her person. Karen obliged me. Am I spoiled or what?!?

Big bags are very hot right now too. I feel so jazzed when I can make something that is cutting edge. It would also make a fantastic knitting or travel bag.

Yarn: Rowan Big Wool Fusion #02 Gooseberry - 4 balls

Notions: 10 inch circular bamboo purse handle, approx. 2 yds lining fabric

Comments: If a giant bag is not for you, this can easily be made smaller by using a finer gauged yarn. It is done in the round, and stitches are picked up at the bottom. No seaming required.

What I Learned: Pressing cotton, especially lace, makes for a beautiful fabric

Notes: I made Ringlet as a shop sample for Yarntopia. I really, really like it. The design is sort of a departure for me. I'm not a big lace knitting fan, but this pattern really called to me. It would be a great project for a beginning lace/sweater knitter. It is really just made of two large squares of lace (front and back) and two small squares of lace (the sleeves).

Campy Knitting

My girls are on spring break this weekend and my hubby took the week off to watch them while they are at home. I thought it would be a great time to take them camping. We like to do it at least once a year, but it seemed like the rest of Texas thought it would be a great weekend as well. All of the choice spots were full. We wound up staying at Goliad State Park, which I would recommend if you are a Texas history buff. The missions and fort are really cool, and the nature trails are perfect for little hikers.

I pulled a Sheryl on this trip and decided that I MUST have a kerchief to wear on the day that we left. I whipped one up on the way there, and it served me well. My hubby told me that I looked like an amish woman, but WHATEVER...I liked it. In the above picture, I'm wearing said kerchief and working on a Louisa Harding sweater from her new book Swallowtails. Louisa Harding is one of my favorite yarn lines. If you want to try a truly lux yarn in amazing colors, I highly recommend.

I may be roughing it, but I refuse to rough it when it comes to yarn. That's how I roll.

Scarf-o-Rama

I told Sheryl a while back that I would rather blow my brains out than knit a scarf. I have paid my dues when it comes to scarf knitting, as most of us knitters have. It is a beginning knitters rite of passage I suppose. I have nothing against scarves, per se. Wearing a scarf always makes me feel sassy (berets do too, but that is another story). I just can't bear to knit them anymore. So I won't...I'll crochet one....

Yarn: Malabrigo in Bobby Blue, the trim is Rowan Wool Cotton in Mocha

Ahhh....my first crochet project. I've been bit by the crochet bug. Next up, a skirt

Now on to some momma pride. I commissioned my daughter R (age 6) to do a shop sample for Yarntopia. It paid off. The RT scarf has sold a yarn we been trying to move since we opened. When I put it on display at the shop, R insisted that I put on the tag that she finished it in two days. That's my little knitting prodigy!

Yarn: Two balls of Berroco Tutu, I forget the color. Cast on 7 st with a #17 and knit until you run out.

My last picture is not exactly as scarf. It is really more of a wrap, but it is pretty darn scarf-like. I knit one of these over a year ago for my blog friend ThatFarmGirl . I had quite a bit of the yarn left over, so I thought I would knit one up for myself.

I think I'm more of a garment knitter. I don't enjoy the process of knitting socks. Maybe I'll change my mind one day. I won't be getting rid of my sock yarn stash just yet.

French Girl is excited to announce the first of our "Chez French Girl" tours in the Southwest of France, beginning September, 2007. These tours have been a dream of ours for years, and we are pleased to see them come to fruition. Spend a week in a beautifully restored winemaker's house that is now a "chambre d'hotes" (the French Bed & Breakfast) in the Languedoc region of France. The "Undiscovered France", Languedoc, just west of the more touristed Provence, has retained the quiet charm and unspoiled beauty that has drawn Kristeen and myself there time and time again.

Three mornings, you'll learn new knitting techniques from renowned instructor Annie Modesitt, while the afternoons will be spent taking short excursions to colorful local markets, charming hilltop villages, and other points of interest. We'll take a barge cruise down the tree-shaded Canal du Midi as it weaves its way through vineyard-laced hills, past tiny hamlets and enchanting villages. And of course, we'll spend hours on the sun-drenched beaches of the Mediterranean.

Chez French Girl Tours offer something that many others lack - total relaxation. In contrast to the whirlwind trips that wisk you from one site to another, here you will spend the entire week in one location, with time to knit, read, swim in the pool, or just do nothing...where only birdsong, the wind in the trees, and the clicking of your knitting needles will interrupt the peace and quiet. Our welcoming hosts are experts in the celebrated wines of the region and are world travelers as well; both are conversant in both French and English.

Our chambre d'hotes, called "La Vigneronne", sits at the outskirts of the small village of Faugeres, nestled in the hills just an hour from the Mediterranean. It is truly one of the most beautiful spots in which we have stayed in all of our trips to France, and we are proud to make it available to our clients. Comments: You aren't suffering from vertigo. One of my 6-year-olds took the picture. Such is the life of a mother whose husband works late.

Love the pattern. I had the whole thing done in about 4 days. I think it is kind of Anthropologie-esque. The ribbing makes it figure flattering, even for a big yarn knit. I think it will become my toss on sweater whenever I get a chill.

There are a few mistakes in the pattern, which I emailed to the French Girl. If you have any questions (Stefanie) before she has them posted, just shoot me an email.

Pattern: A custom pattern I printed up from the computer program Sweater Wizard

Yarn: Louisa Harding Flotsam #4

Comments: When I put this yarn on the shelf when we opened the store, I knew that this yarn would be mine. The color combination is my absolute favorite, robin egg blue and brown. This is a really interesting yarn too. The base of it is like cotton interfacing. It has a string of blue with little slubs of cotton and it is all bound together with a gold string. The effect knit up is really cool. As an added bonus, it is washable! Plus, with it being mainly cotton, it will be a great sweater for our mild Houston winters.

Now, on to love. Today is my eleventh wedding anniversary. Boy, have the years flown. It has been a wonderful ride. I love you Kevin.

Easy V-Neck Sweater

I don't know why this picture looks so weird. My dad let me borrow his camera, and I suppose I haven't figured out how to work it properly.

I am using this sweater to teach our Sweater Phobia class at the shop. We have so many talented customers who have all of the skill sets needed to knit this, but just need a little push. This sweater is done totally in the round without seaming, so it should be a snap for even the novice knitter.

I am so excited to be along for the ride with my students. When I knit my first sweater, Tempting from Knitty, I was hooked. I haven't looked back since. I hope my students will have the same experience.

Twinkletoes & Knitty Gritty

As I mentioned in a previous post, my daughters REALLY wanted these for Christmas. They were so disappointed when I told them the two pairs I made were for the shop **wink, wink**. I loved this quick knit because A) it was for my daughters, B) Calmer is one of my all time favorite yarns, and C) each slipper only took one evening to make. I have a real soft spot for quick knits.

Comments: As I mentioned in my previous post, I test knit this for Stefanie Japel, the designer behind Glampyre. Very easy knit, although the seaming was a bit tricky due to the lace. Definitely a keeper! I'm also adding Duchess to my list of all time favorite yarns.

In other news...

Y'all cracked me up with the hair comments. I'm surprised anyone even noticed! I was wearing my clip on extensions in the picture. If any of y'all have wimpy hair like I do, you should consider trying them. I feel so "Hollywood" when I wear them!

My next topic: Christmas knitting. I told everyone I wasn't doing it after my mad dash last year. Little did I know that my girls would see the Twinkletoes pattern on this most recent Knitty. Now, when your babies tell you all they want for Christmas are the slippers and a scooter, any self-respecting mother and knitter will drop all and get to knitting.

I have been knitting like a mad woman, but unfortunately all of the projects are test knits for designers, so I can't post pictures until the patterns are published. Camellia, by Glampyre, was just put on her website for sale. I did mine in Classic Elite Duchess. I'll try to drag my sorry patootie in front of a camera and get a picture of it soon.

What I learned: Single crochet edging
Comments: When I saw the fall French Girl collection at TNNA, this was my least favorite pattern. Because we are trying to make our own French Girl trunk show, I buckled down and knitting it anyway. Boy, am I glad I did! I absolutely love it. It has wonderful shaping thanks to short rows. It makes me feel like I'm wearing something high fashion. It is super easy to make. It only took me two days to complete.

Let the French Girl love commence!

Pattern: Fantine by French Girl

Yarn: Big Wool Fusion #5 Tapestry

Needles: Addi Turbo #17 32"

Comments: I am so happy with this pattern. I love that it is done totally seamless. It took me two days to knit! I really like the twisted stitch detail on the edges, collar, and hem. As an added bonus, this pattern has several variations to choose from. You can do it in either the rounded collar or a Mandarin collar. You can also choose between cap or 3/4 sleeves. The sweater only took three balls of Big Wool, so the cost isn't too bad either!

OK, I know this isn't a picture of me, but the one I took does not come close to doing this sweater justice. You will just have to imagine me in it.

Pattern: Desiree by French Girl

Yarn: Rowan Big Wool #37 Zing (a grass green color)

Needle: Addi Turbo #17 32"

Comments: This is the first pattern that I test knit for Kristeen (aka the French Girl), so I've actually been done with her for quite a while. My name is even on the pattern! I'm so proud!

Again, I love this sweater. The collar and cuff details are beautiful. I thing the faux darts at the bottom of the sweater are so attractive as well (see the picture of the back below). I don't think I've ever seen them on a sweater before. Another winner from Kristeen.

Yarn: Rowan Biggy Print #246 Razzle Dazzle (pink), #255 Allsorts (red), #258 Sheep (white)
Comments: Super easy knit. It literally took me less than 30 minutes to knit this hat. Talk about a great Christmas gift! The pattern calls for the braided tassel on top, but I opted to leave it off of my version.

This was another of my test knits for Kristeen. I even got credit on the pattern for this one. I'm SOOOO jazzed about that.

Here is my next French Girl knit - Fantine! Such a cool pattern. It can be knit 4 ways : Mardarin collar w/cap sleeves, Mandarin collar with 3/4 sleeves, round collar with cap sleeves, or round collar with 3/4 sleeves. It only takes 2-4 balls of Rowan Big Wool, so it wont break the bank either. Score.

Notes: The pattern calls for a size #15 needle, but I used a #13 in the hopes of making the xs size even smaller. It is still a bit big on the girls, but they love it anyway. Can you tell?

As some of you know, Sheryl and I have been working on test knitting (or test crocheting in Sheryl's case) for Kristeen for a while now. This is the first one that I've completed that I can post because THE PATTERN IS AVAILABLE FOR SALE AT THE SHOP!! I actually have 3 others on the needles (all amazing), but I have to keep them under wraps.

Because this was a test knit, my version varies slightly from the one available to the public. After I started knitting mine, Kristeen decided to go down a needle size. I still love the finished product.

I'm really enjoying the whole test knitting gig. I like that I'm able to get a jump on making these designs, and I especially love helping out Kristeen. She is so sweet and extremely talented in my humble opinion.

Comments: I have a love/hate relationship with socks. I start out like gang busters, and then quickly tire of them. I had to force myself to finish these babies, but I'm glad I did. The Fleece Artist sock yarn is the best that I've worked with.

My summer of selfish knitting

A few post ago, I mentioned that I was hesitant about knitting shop samples. I worried about people critiquing my work. Sheryl and I talked about it some more, and we figured out the REAL reason why I don't want to just knit for the shop. We put so much of our blood, sweat, and tears into Yarntopia, we don't want to also give up the main reason why we got into the business in the first place. Knitting for pleasure. When you knit for work, it's work. We have plenty of people who are clamoring to sample knit for the shop, so we are going to let them.

Thus begins my summer of selfish knitting.

Pattern: Gina from Rowan's The Bigger Picture

Yarn: Rowan Biggy Print #260 Mermaid
Needles: US #35 straights
Comments: This yarn has been calling me ever since I opened the store. In fact, I think this is the first yarn I have bought (other than the Yarntopia sock yarn) since opening. Such restraint!

Just a few complaint about this knit. Because of the bulkiness of the yarn (5.5 st / 4 in) the seams are bulky. I couldn't get my gauge right, so I just went down to the extra small size. It fits perfectly. And finally, it took WAY more yarn than the pattern said. Three balls to be exact.

The hair clip was used out of desperation. Sheryl and I plan to get some gorgeous shawl pins for the shop soon.

Comments: Another green and blue combination. Can you tell I love green and blue?

This was a simple and satisfying knit. Love the end product. The yarn is a hand dyed cotton chenille that is SO soft. It worms, but you just have to get over it.

(a small plug for Stefanie) I love all of Stefanie's designs. Her fashion sense is similar to mine and her garments are all easy knits. She must hate to seam as much as I do! Check out her latest design that will be coming out soon. We have already ordered it for the shop. You will see me wearing the short sleeve version as soon as I can get my grubby hands on the pattern.

Finally, thank y'all for all of your sweet comments on my new 'do. It has taken me a while to get used to the length, but I must admit is is a lot cooler in the Houston heat.

Back from TNNA

TNNA market is the semi-annual market for the yarn and needlepoint industry. Sheryl decided to stay behind this time to mind the shop. Not wanting me to go by myself, she suggested that I take my sweet mother along with me for company. My mother is an awesome travel companion, and it was nice to have another person's opinion on buying decisions. She has much more conservative tastes than I do, which is reflective of our customer base. I missed having my girl Sheryl there though!

Because we had already bought most of our fall yarn from the reps before the show, I went looking for other goodies. I picked up TONS of new patterns, must notably all of the new French Girl designs. When y'all see how gorgeous they are, y'all are going to flip your lid! Here is a picture of me with my good friend Kristeen, the designer of French Girl. Her patterns are as lovely as she is. Look for her ad in Interweave and Knit Scene. She was kind enough to ask us to participate in her ad. **edit** I took the picture out so as not to give away any previews of her patterns. Y'all will just have to wait!** AMY

I also bought some new bags from Della Q and Lexie Barnes. I won't be able to get the new Lexie's until October, but Della had all over her new stuff. Gorgeous silks and embroidery details on her bags and needle cases. Here is Della in all of her cuteness.

At the show, other shop owners wait in HUGE lines to get books signed by famous authors. Me? You've got to be kidding! You just have to know how to work it. Next, I give you the famous Louisa Harding. She is quite charming and so kind. My LH rep sent her a picture of the Louisa Harding display we had a the store, and she remembered! Way to go Sheryl with your awesome decorating skills!

Finally, may I present the great Debbie Bliss. She was so down to earth and kind. I was looking through her new book with her (fabulous by the way....all I'm saying is "100 % cashmere") when I came across a pattern for a shrug that would look adorable on my girls. I told her as much, and she asked me if I had a picture. I whipped one out toot sweet! She said she would like to use them as models in some of her upcoming books. Too bad I don't live in England! I was so proud.

Enough of my star struck ramblings. Here are the trends that I saw in knitting for fall:

Hot colors - Warm shades of orange & brown
Techniques - Lots of cables and beadwork
More patterns for larger sizes, knitted jewelry, & less novelty yarn. I saw a lot of more classic designs, but with a slight twist to make them interesting.

Comments: The pattern called for 3 balls, but if you wanted to make the handle as long as the picture, you would have to have 4.

Yet another sample for the shop. Can you see a trend? Three purses.

When trying to decide what sample to do next, I couldn't bring myself to knit a sweater. Why you ask? Two reasons really, both I'm embarrassed to admit to. First, I'm feeling really lazy. I don't want to have to think people. Second and most importantly, I'm afraid of my customers critiquing my work. I can just hear them saying as they look at my seaming "Huh, how can she call herself a yarn store owner? Her knitting stinks!" I used to think I was a pretty decent knitter, but I'm feeling the pressure my friends.

Comments:What drew me to this pattern, other than the fact that I love all the French Girl patterns, is the tassels on the bottom. I am a sucker for tassels. My mother had a skirt when I was growing up that had tassels on it that I admired.

I feel a bit exotic when I wear this. I love how it is subtly sexy. Yea for sassy knitting patterns!

This was a very easy pattern to knit and it is perfect for any of y'all who are looking for something handknit that you can wear during the sweltering summer.

Christine from the Houston based knitting podcast Pointy Sticks interviewed me several weeks ago to get the low-down on Yarntopia. Why has no one told me I have the voice of a 12 year old?!? Christine has done a fantastic job with the podcast. She's witty, insightful, and has great music. Go check it out.

I also had the pleasure of seeing Christine this weekend at our grand opening. She even brought us poppy seed bread that her hubby made. Love her! Our grand opening was a smashing success. Thanks to all of y'all who came out. For those of you who couldn't, we appreciate your words of encouragement and hope you can head to Katy soon.

Swatch Watch

Do y'all remember Swatch watches? Anyone who was ANYONE had one in the mid-eighties. Miss Lovie sported the clear one with the clear jelly guard. Stylin'! I even had a peach colored Swatch polo shirt, which I wore in my 7th grade school photo. Yes, I looked hideous with the chrysanthemum bangs and braces. No, I will not show you the picture.

Now, when I think of a swatch, I think of this. As I mentioned in a previous post, we are knitting swatches of all of the yarns we are carrying in the store. This is no small chore. Here are a few that I've done.

Did any of y'all catch the premier episode Stitchcraft on Oxygen this past Sunday? From what I saw, it is more of a glimpse of knitting in the fashion world as opposed to a technique program. I enjoyed it, and I hope there will be more episodes to come.

Tilli Thomas

Sheryl read in one of our many retail books that you should buy at least one "stretch" item for your shop. Something that is a gamble. This is our "stretch" item. It is Disco Lights from Tilli Thomas. The yarn is 225 yds, worsted weight, 100% spun silk with tiny sequins. Can you see them sparkling in the sunlight? As you can imagine, it is pricey. But Lordy be me it is gorgeous!

Rowan Order & Needle Exchange

Feast your eyes on what showed up at my house this past Friday. This is our Rowan, Nashua, Bryson, and book order. I couldn't even get all of the boxes in the picture because they go around the corner! It took me from about noon until 9:30 pm to inventory it all. That is even with my sweet friend Jennifer coming over to help for several hours.

One of the things we are doing for the shop is knitting swatches of all of our yarn. I think it will give our customers a better idea of what things look like knit up. They can also sit down and knit a little with the ball that we used for the swatch. Looks like I had better get busy. This picture was taken after I had already sent at least twelve balls of yarn home with Sheryl and Jennifer.

My good friend Catherine is hosting a needle exchange. This is a fun, quick, and less expensive alternative to doing the Secret Pal. Just one package required. Who doesn't love to get stuff in the mail?

Some of y'all who have been reading my humble blog for a while know that I love French Girl patterns. I re-discovered this pattern and yarn in my stash over the weekend and whipped it up in less than three days. I apologize for the sorry excuse for a picture. Here is a better one. I'm so excited to be able to carry the entire French Girl line. I think this will make a nice store display.

Big Day

We are receiving the keys to the shop today. I woke up at 2:30 this morning so excited that I couldn't go back to sleep. We have tons to do, and I'm ready to go!

My entire dining room is filled with yarn. It distracts me whenever I walk by because I just want to stop and pet it. The sad thing is, what is sitting in my house is only 1/10th of the total amount we will be getting in within the next few weeks. Beat still my heart.

My knitting savant daughter was so thrilled to get y'alls comments on her scarf. I had to read all of them to her, and then go to your blog to show her a picture of you. She wanted to put a face to the name, I suppose. She has been knitting up a storm. Here's the proof.

Catching up

I planned to post this before I left for TNNA, so all of this is old news. Old news, but good news definitely worthy of a post.

At the beginning of January, I got to meet one of my blog friends in the flesh. Stephanie at Knit and Scrap met me for coffee at my neighborhood coffee shop. She was such a delight. I love how so often with knitters you have an instant connection and rapport. Thank you Stephanie for coming to see me, and I look forward to seeing you again when Yarntopia opens.

I brazenly signed up for a crochet class at TNNA not knowing how to crochet. My sweet friend Sheryl graciously offered to teach me in crash course fashion. I learned at least enough so that I didn't look like a complete idiot. Crochet is going to supposedly be "the next big thing" in the fiber world. I'm looking forward with eager anticipation to Debbie Stoller's new crochet book. My current opinion of crochet is this: it is fun to do, it certainly has appropriate applications, but I like the look and the process of knitting better.

My sweet gadget guru brother gave me his old MP3 player. I've had a ball downloading and listening to all of the knitting podcasts. And because I am so inundated with knitting at the moment, I've taken a break from the podcasts by checking out books on CD from the library and downloading them into my player. Reading is one of my favorite past-times, so now I can semi-read and knit at the same time. I'm a happy gal.

I have a little favor to ask of y'all. I would really be jazzed if y'all would sign in on my Frapper site (see sidebar on the left).

Finally, and most importantly, my daughter has her first FO! Her interest in the scarf ebbed and waned (like most of us with our UFO's), but she perservered. The colorful things on her scarf are buttons we used to fix some of her "design features". I am so proud of my little knitting savant!

We've made it back from an exciting 5 days in San Diego. I'm still trying to recuperate from the exhaustion. My body is tired, but my enthusiasm is soaring. There is so much to tell, and because I am not nearly the writer Sheryl is, I'm just going to list the highlights.

First and foremost, hanging out with all of the people attending the show has just reinforced my belief that fiber arts people are the nicest and coolest people EVER!
Sheryl is not only a wonderful business partner, but a great friend and travel companion.
Being prepared for something as huge as TNNA is essential. Because of our prior planning, we weren't overwhelmed. We actually enjoyed ourselves.
I'm not going to list all of the cool new products that we saw on the show because Knitters Review did it for me. I'll whet your appetite by saying that we bought the majority of the things that they mentioned for the shop.
I acted like a geeky knitting designer fan at the show. I was beyond tickled to meet Amy Singer of Knitty fame, Lilly Chin, Nicky Epstein, and Melissa Leapman. Amy was the sweetest. She even gave me a shout out on her blog. Does that mean I'm almost famous?? Lilly Chin is a hoot. She is very high energy and has fun with her attire. She definitely stands out in a crowd (in a good way). Nicky Epstein has a new book coming out called Fabulous Felted Bags. Believe me, they are FABULOUS.
